Usaf Msgt. (Ret.) John C. "Sonny" Thompson

USAF MSgt. (Ret.) John C. “Sonny” Thompson, age 86 of Fairborn, passed away Saturday December 23, 2023.  He was born October 10, 1937 in Brooklyn, Maryland, the son of the late Percy R. and Elizabeth L. (Wick) Thompson.

Sonny served his country in the US Air Force in acquisition logistics, retiring in 1980 at the rank of Master Sergeant; and followed with employment in civil service at Wright-Patterson AFB, retiring after a combined 35+ years of federal service.

Airstreaming was an integral part of Sonny and his wife, Mary Lou’s life for close to 50 years and they appreciated the many friendships made and experiences shared over the years.  Sonny also was a very active 45-year member of Fairborn Lodge No. 764 F&AM, including the Scottish Rite; a longtime member of Fairborn United Methodist Church; and a member American Legion Dignam-Whitmore Post 526.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet.  He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Lou; two sons, Scott (Kellay) Thompson of Huber Heights, Dana Thompson of Dayton; two grandchildren, Christopher (Libby) Thompson, Nicholas Thompson; three great-grandchildren, Alivia, Eric, Violet; a sister, Linda (Clyde) McIntyre of Florida; as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and many friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday December 28, 2023 from 2:00 – 5:00 P.M. at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn.  A Masonic service will begin at 5:00 P.M. followed by a funeral service officiated by Pastor Jeffrey Blair. Inurnment with full military honors will be held at the Dayton National Cemetery in January.
