Shirley Shonkwiler

Shirley Shonkwiler, age 91 of Fairborn passed away surrounded by her family Thursday October 12, 2023.  She was born March 27, 1932 in Ohio Co., Kentucky, the daughter of the late Aubrey and Belva Newcom.  Shirley retired from the City of Fairborn. She was a longtime member of Byron Church ; enjoyed reading, puzzles and was an avid bowler and Cincinnati Reds fan.  Family was most important to Shirley, you could find her at the ballpark watching her husband, sons and grandchildren play ball. Her favorite time was the holidays, gathering the family together.  You could find her sitting outside watching the birds and the white squirrel that would come along.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell; granddaughter, Angel Byrd; sister, Mary Allen; six brothers, Harold, Roy, Everett, Maxwell, Kenneth, and Lawrence.  Shirley is survived by her two sons, Russell (Jennifer); Rodney (Tammy); two grandchildren, David (Stacy), Amy (Tony) Neville; six great-grandchildren, Skylar (Destiny), Ethan, Payten, Anthony, Jacob, Monica; brother, Paul Newcom; sister, Virginia (Jim) Smith; as well as extended family; two special friends, Linda and Missy.A graveside service will be held on Tuesday October 17, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at Byron Cemetery, 3256 Trebein Rd., Fairborn, Pastor Allen Erdman officiating.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton in memory of Shirley.
