Shirley M. Schroer

Shirley M. Schroer, age 84 of Fairborn, passed away Friday July 27, 2018 at Hospice of Dayton.  She was born December 13, 1933 in Pulaski Co., IN, the daughter of the late Charles F. and Purlie (Rouck) Peter.  Shirley earned a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Wright State University and a Master’s degree in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University.  She was passionate about her work as a clinical social worker and was recognized for her expertise working with victims and offenders of sexual abuse. She was instrumental in the establishment of Grace House, a treatment center for abused children and adults. She volunteered as a reading tutor with Fairborn City primary schools. Additionally she and had a passion for making certain that children in need attending the Fairborn Public Schools were provided with shoes. Shirley was a long term member of The First Presbyterian Church of Fairborn , formerly serving as an Elder and Deacon. She was active in the Rona Hills Women’s Group, Greene County Council on Aging and Fairborn Senior Center. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, John.  Survivors include two daughters, Donna Downing (Dan Kulhanek), Marcia Schroer; a son, John (Lynn) Schroer; six grandchildren, David (April) Downing, Daniel Downing (fiancé, Brittany Gary), Justin (Jessica) Gnagy, Katie (Scott) Crosby, Caroline (Ethan) Brackley, Marie (Mitchell) Gillispie; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Studnicka; sister-in-law, Lois Dion; as well as extended family.  The family will receive friends on Friday August 3, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn.  A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 4, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Presbyterian Church, 1130 Highview Drive, Rev. Karen Cassedy officiating.  Burial will follow at the Byron Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may made to First Presbyterian Church of Fairborn to be used for Shoes for Shirley program -or- Hospice of Dayton -or- Heifer Project https://www.heifer.org. The Family would like to recognize and thank the volunteers and staff at Hospice of Dayton for their outstanding compassion and care of Shirley.
