Robert E. Burkhart

January 16, 1926 — August 1, 2024

Robert E. Burkhart, of Fairborn, Ohio, passed away on August 1, 2024 surrounded by his family. Born in Alliance, Ohio, he grew up on his family’s farm where he developed his strong work ethic, self-reliance, and a lifelong love of hunting and the outdoors.

After graduating from Mount Union College with a degree in Physics, he joined the United States Air Force. In 1951 he completed advanced flight training and deployed with the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron to Korea, flying 100 combat missions. Returning from the war, Bob met his future wife Nancy on a beach in North Carolina. They married and began their journey together lasting until her passing on July 28, 2024.

His career in the Air Force included flying with the United States Navy as an exchange pilot on the U.S.S. Coral Sea along with deployments to Europe, the Middle East, and Vietnam. Bob logged over 3000 hours in jets and earned numerous decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. His last duty assignment brought him to Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where he completed his Master’s Degree. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 22 years of service and then worked for another 20 years as an auditor for the State of Ohio.

A devoted husband to Nancy, his wife of 71 years, Bob was never without the laminated card in his wallet featuring a different photo of her on each side. As a civilian pilot, he flew both of them in small planes, adventuring across the country, often visiting friends and family. He loved spending time with his four children — especially outdoors, including playing tennis, gathering blackberries, and hunting for morel mushrooms. His warmth, kindness and integrity were revered by those who knew him. He will be fondly remembered, celebrated, and deeply missed. Bob is survived by his four children, Eric, Michael, Ann, and Karen; granddaughter Lisa and her two children.

A private remembrance and celebration of his life will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers please donate to your favorite charity.
