Orby E. Hurley

Orby Edward Hurley, age 94 of Fairborn, passed to be with his Lord on Monday, October 15. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Leona (Oakley) Hurley, his sisters Opal Hurley Mann Green and Mary Hurley Lee, his brother Jim Hurley, and his infant son (by his first wife), Michael Hurley.  Orby is survived by his son, Philip Hurley, his daughter Sharon (Hurley) Short and son-in-law David Short, his step-daughter Rhonda (Fannin) Craig and step-son-in-law Chad Craig, step-son David Fannin and step-daughter-in-law Marlene Fannin, as well as his grandchildren: Phil Hurley, Edward Hurley, Elizabeth Hurley, Katherine Short and Gwendolyn Short, and great-grandchildren, Tristan Hurley and Sydney Hurley, sister-in-law, Roslyn Hurley, special niece, Dr. Patricia (John) Sobrero, special nephew, Gene Mann. He is also survived by his dear church friend and brother in Christ, Rodney Miller. Born April 24, 1926 in Yocum, Kentucky to Louraney and James Hurley, he grew up in modest means but always said his parents provided a firm foundation and values. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in France and Germany as a BAR gunner in the 29th Infantry Division. He was war-wounded, carrying shrapnel in his side through the remainder of his life, and earned a Purple Heart designation. In 2011, at the age of 87, he was able to travel back to France to visit the grave of his assistant gunner killed in action, as well as many sites where Orby saw action. Orby worked for many years as a machinist and in the mid-1960s established his own tool-and-die shop, Hurley’s Machine Shop, which he ran until his early 80s. He also served as a pastor in his own church in the Apostolic faith and went on many missionary trips to the Philippines. After retiring as a pastor, he became a faithful and beloved member of Lifeway Pentecostal Apostolic Church in Xenia, Ohio, where he remained a member until his passing.
