Nadine A. Thornton, age 82 of Fairborn, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family, Tuesday February 1, 2022. She was born January 27, 1940 in San Francisco, CA, the daughter of the late Dean and Margaret (Heatherman) Morris.
After graduating from St. Francis School of Nursing in Wichita, KS, in 1961, Nadine served her country in the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant and registered nurse. She was honorably discharged in 1965 and later found employment for many years with Villa Fairborn Nursing Home, later Wright Nursing and Rehabilitation. Nadine was especially fond of the elderly patients in her care and would often share charming stories about them with her children. She was a longtime member of Mary, Help of Christians Catholic Church.
Nadine was keenly involved in her children’s extracurricular activities, acting as Den Mother for both her sons’ Cub Scout Dens, supporting her daughter’s baton twirling aspirations, and attending many, many soccer games. Nadine enjoyed gardening and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Fairborn Beautification Committee in 2008 for her attractive and well kept front yard. Nadine was a Mary Kay Consultant for 35 years and took great pleasure in hosting a holiday open house every Christmas for her customers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt Col William D. Thornton Jr., USAF (ret). in 2016; her son, Michael D. Thornton in 2019; and her brother, Michael H. Morris, in 1963. She is survived by her son, Lt Col William D. (Tracy)Thornton III, USAF (ret), of Springfield OH; her daughter, Christine T. (Jeffrey) Mance, of Red Hook, NY; her daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Hankel)Thornton of Enon, OH; 4 grandchildren, Veronica and Gabrielle Thornton, and Payton and Jacob Mance; 2 sisters, Jane (Vernon) Wood of Grapevine, TX, and Mary (Rodney) Paramoure, of Marietta, GA; several nieces and nephews and many beloved extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday February 9, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn, Deacon Max Roadruck officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service. Burial with military honors will follow at the Byron Cemetery.
