John F. Maiorano, age 87, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 18, 2023. He was born October 16, 1935 in Belvedere, Delaware, the son of the late Frank and Angeline (Fortugno) Maiorano. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by grandsons, Christopher, Daniel, Dominic; brothers, Irvin Maiorano and Joe Maiorano. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Carol (Copeland) Maiorano; sons, John N. (Linda), Jeffery (Kellye); daughter, Jeanne Newsome (Sean); seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Maiorano; as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family and close friends.
John graduated from Conrad High School then attended the University of Delaware where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. He later earned his Professional Engineering license for both Delaware and Ohio. In addition, he earned an MBA from THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY.
His career spanned several decades, beginning with service to his country in the U.S. Army and followed in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was employed in civil service at Wright-Patterson AFB from 1963 to 1990 at AFLC HQ. During his tenure at WPAFB he organized and directed the Directorate of Environmental Management for over 20 years. He was lead on the Air Force // McDonnell Douglas team to construct 3 Royal Saudi Air Force bases for F-15 fighters, as well as establishing a US Air Force depot at RAF Kembler. He initiated the project that led to the development of the only private sector financed construction of a hotel and convention center complex at a DoD installation at WPAFB.
John loved to teach and was an adjunct professor at the University of Dayton and a tutor for illiterate adults. When he retired from civil service, he became heavily involved at Mary Help of Christians parish, including serving as the business manager, as the lector on the bereavement committee, and with bible study classes. John also was active with St. Vincent de Paul and the Knights of Columbus where he served as a grand knight for a term.
A committed family man, John will be remembered for his love for his wife, children, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all of those that knew and loved him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mary Help of Christians Parish, 954 N. Maple Avenue, Fairborn, Father Charles Lang Celebrant. The family will receive friends from 10:15 A.M. until the time of service at the church. Burial with military honors to follow at Fairfield Cemetery, Fairborn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Dayton -or- St. Vincent de Paul, 124 W. Apple St., Dayton, OH 45402.
